By mid-week Robert's trial was over (the defendant was found guilty) and we were able to sneak away for a couple of days to Palm Springs while my parents watched the girls.
It was such a great getaway and exactly what we needed. We spent both the days in the pool and the evenings eating and drinking like royalty. It was perfect.
We also made it home just in time to celebrate Papa's birthday.
Mila has graduated Kindergarten! Can you believe it?! (I can't). I wasn't sure what to expect on the day other than I knew they took cap and gown pictures and Mila said they "were planning something....and I was definitely going to cry"!
It was a really cute ceremony and all about the Kindergarteners. They sang a couple of songs and each came up to the microphone and said how they can help change the world (Mila's answer was "go to college"). Then they were presented with their diplomas and sang another song before heading back to the classroom for a reception that the 1st graders put on for them.
Mrs. Johnsen was the SWEETEST teacher; we really lucked out with how great she was and her fun and with her laidback teaching style. Mila just adored her and didn't want to continue on to first grade because she didn't want to leave Mrs. Johnsen.
Mila is actually leaving Grace Lutheran in the fall to go to public school at Hope View Elementary. We also knew we wouldn't stay on the private school track but we weren't ready to make the change yet when it was time to go to Kindergarten. We ended up staying put, which was SUCH a great decision, and revisited it again this year. We are all very excited for Mila to start her new school but she is very sad to be leaving so many of her friends, especially one of her best friends, Layla. We are really hoping to keep these two together with playdates!
Mila had an indoor soccer game on Father's Day (shocker!) and it was so cute because all of the dads attended and they got this super cute photo of all of them!
Nellie is loving soccer and is turning out to be more aggressive that her sister! She's having so much fun with her coach and her team and loves being a part of something that her sister has been so involved in for the past couple of months. It's so funny because about half of the Lil Slammers team are all younger sisters of Mila's team.
We celebrated her end of the year (and preschool!) with a school picnic. Nellie was so happy to celebrate with her friends and to try ALL the desserts that were brought out.
She is having quite a change next year as well as she is leaving the preschool side and starting over on the school side in Jr. Kindergarten. She's VERY excited about it (I made the mistake of telling her in May and now we have been hearing about it multiple times a week..."is it time for Jr. K? is it time for Jr. K?? IS IT TIME FOR JR. K?!") and can't wait to be on "the same side as Mila," although I am not sure she realizes Mila won't be there anymore! She will see all of Mila's friends, however, at before/after school care so that will probably make her just as happy. Our biggest struggle with this one, I am calling it now, is that she will have to wear uniforms. She's so independent and takes a lot of time picking out the perfect outfit so it may be a big issue for her!
Swim lessons started right after school ended and I have the girls in for half of June and all of July, Mon-Thurs. It was quite chaotic getting into the routine but I think it's very important for them to take all the lessons they can for swimming, especially since they live near the ocean and so many people have pools at their houses. Their swim lessons are amazing and they are leaning not just how to be water safe but how to really swim (diving, breaststroke, butterfly stroke...whatever all the other strokes are, etc.). I told them swim lessons are non-negotiable but if they're too tired for soccer, we can skip during the summer (we have yet to miss!).
On Father's Day we had the best trio of visitors come to town...the Browns!!! They came for an entire week this trip so it wasn't rushed and hurried this time, which was SO nice. They were able to go and explore around the area, whereas they usually just stay at our house. Mila, Nellie and William had SO SO SO much fun together and it was so great seeing them play and interact together. They picked up right where they left off the last time they saw each other like it was just last week.
About halfway through their trip to Southern California both our families (and Nana and Papa) packed up and headed down to Encinitas for a couple of days. Growing up, my family took a family vacation every year...this continued all the way up to our family trip to Myrtle Beach when I was pregnant with Mila! With the birth of our kids we got off track because it was too hard to travel with such little kids. We knew we wanted to start it up again but it was a little more complicated since now we have kids and husbands! We agreed for the first trip we would do the San Diego area since there is so many family friendly things to do. My parents rented an Airbnb for us in Encinitas and we used that as our home base; each smaller family did their own thing and we were able to come together in the mornings and the evenings and it was perfect.
The girls have been asking to go to Legoland forever (Nellie was even telling people we were going, when we weren't; her teachers asked me multiple times how Legoland was because Nellie kept sharing the story during circle time!) and we used this trip to finally take them there!
We loved Leucadia and unintentionally spent a lot of time there; it was the quintessential sleepy beach town and we found so many great places to hang out.
We spent a lot of time in the pool in the backyard; all the kids were such little fish, swimming every chance they could get. Their favorites were night swims and jumping in the pool, especially from the hot tub.
So many great memories were made and I can't wait for the next one!
What we're looking forward to next month: 4th of July, Tucalota Springs camping trip with friends, soccer tournament in Del Mar and Whitney's bachelorette party in Denver.
